I implemented a pilot program using The STAR Technique in an elementary-middle school in Belize, Central America. The following interview is with a teacher whose students are 10 to 13 years old. He used the physical exercises and breathing techniques of The STAR Technique in his class every day for one week during the 2011 school year.
How did your students respond to the physical exercises of The STAR Technique?
“They say that the physical movements helped them concentrate. It refreshed their minds. They say they feel happier. Moving around helps them feel healthy. They were more focused and could concentrate better on what I was teaching them.”
How did your students respond to the breathing techniques of The STAR Technique?
“I have been doing the deep breathing exercises in my class for the last week. They love it! They like how it feels when they breathe in, hold it, and breathe out. I keep count for them. One of my students said, ‘Will you make us breathe in and out again tomorrow?’ My students say that the breathing helps them feel fresh and healthy, like how they feel when they go out in the early morning and breathe fresh air. They say it feels like they breathe out bad air and breathe in new air. It makes their minds fresh.”
How do you think The STAR Technique has helped your students?
“I think the STAR helps them be motivated to learn more and ready to do their work. Now when I am teaching them about basic arithmetic, they are ready to respond. One of them said, ‘What was bothering me when I came to school is gone. Stressful thoughts, gone.'”
Do you plan to continue using The STAR Technique in your class? Would you recommend that other teachers try it?
“I will keep using the STAR every day until school gets out in June. It works! It really works. Let’s continue doing it. My students want to do more of the STAR.” —F.C., Elementary-Middle School Teacher, Belize, Central America
